Whether it is a subtle look for your everyday trip to work or the shops, or a full face for a girl’s night out, getting those long lashes is something we all dream of.
Having exhausted a number of false lashes, lash extensions, and mascaras, it is no lie that being able to get a false lash effect using mascara only is the thing we all dream of. It would make life so much simpler for us all.
So, I took it upon myself to experiment with a number of mascaras, all claiming to achieve the look we desire so much. I thought I would narrow it down to my top 5, to save you all the hassle.
From a young age I have gotten through more mascaras than I care to admit, so today I am going to summarize years of experiences, and hours of reading reviews, and hopefully by the time you reach the end of this article you will have one that you can stick with forever, just as I now have.
Not only does the mascara itself matter, but when deciding the best, you also have to consider brand, accessibility and affordability. For these reasons, I have decided to keep this article affordable and relatable to the brands that we are all used to.
Rimmel Scandaleyes – Best Drugstore Mascara for False Lash Effect
First up, we have Rimmel Scandaleyes. This is an original for many years now, that a lot of us have probably tried.
Not only is it ridiculously affordable, but Rimmel has been around for years, producing reliable, resilient, and flattering makeup.
Scandaleyes not only comes with a large brush to help with application, but it is an extremely dark black that only takes one application to notice the difference.
The brush is so effective that I have actually transferred the brush to alternative mascaras in the past to continue using it for such a satisfying application.
This mascara leaves you with dramatic, false lash effect lashes, but is not for those looking to have a subtle touch of mascara. The bold effect lasts all night and the design of the brush means that each individual lash is separated and coated, giving your eyes a burst!
The only downside to Rimmel Scandaleyes is that it is such a great mascara, it can be quite tricky to remove without wanting to rip your lashes out. However, if you have the patience for a slow and long removal, this is the one for you.
Pros and Cons
- Affordable
- Dramatic effect
- Dramatic color
- Stays on
- Large brush can make lower lash application difficult
- Difficult removal
Too Faced Better Than Sex – Best Mascara for False Lash Effect
Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara really is what it says on the package.
The unique brush design allows for it to shape your eyes perfectly, adding length to even the lashes that are hard to reach.
Not only do your lashes look longer, but you are left looking as though you have more lashes as well. I am not sure of the science behind it, but whilst it sits slightly more expensive than your highstreet brands, the effects make it entirely worth it.
Not only does the brush extend and somehow multiply lashes, but the thinner center allows for easy application to your bottom lashes too. This is not so much the case with Rimmel Scandaleyes mascara due to the size of the brush.
It is a fantastic addition to any makeup bag, and not only does it work, but it is also available in a waterproof version for those rainy days.
Pros and Cons
- Waterproof (available)
- Unique brush design
- Dramatic effect
- More expensive
Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara – Best Mascara for False Lash Look
Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara is another classic. Having used this for years, I cannot quite remember why I stopped.
Again, the high street brand means that it is easily accessible and affordable.
Similar to Too Faced, it has a unique brush design, found on many of the Maybelline mascara products. The curve of the brush fits the shape of your eye perfectly.
Whilst this is a wonderful, blacker than black color, I do usually have to apply a couple of coats.
Whilst this is not ideal, after a couple of coats it does give one of the best final results of all mascaras. The thin bristles mean that the application is extremely smooth and clump-free. Whilst Rimmel gives the dramatic effect we all desire, this mascara manages to achieve something similar but with a very natural look.
Pros and Cons
- Unique brush design
- Natural look
- Affordable
- Needs multiple applications
Charlotte Tilbury Full Fat Lashes Mascara – Best False Lash Mascara
Again, whilst this is slightly more expensive than those found in everyday drug stores, Charlotte Tilbury Full Fat Lashes Mascara is show stopping.
If you are stuck choosing between length and volume, this one truly has both.
The clump resistant formula means that this mascara glides and coates your lashes like no other. With an exceptional number of bristles on the brush, each lash turns out defined and bold.
The brush not only separates and defines lashes, but helps to curl them as well, giving an extremely successful false lash look that will be catching people’s eye all night.
Whenever I wear this I am asked what mascara I use so I guess the proof is in the pudding!
The unique formula also means it is incredibly light on your eyes, whereas a lot of drug store mascaras can feel quite heavy.
Pros and Cons
- Unique clump resistant formula
- Unique brush design
- Separates and lifts
- Expensive
- Not as easily accessible
Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Curling and Lifting Mascara – Best Lengthening Mascaras
When it comes to adding length, Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Curling and Lifting Mascara is the one for you. Like most benefit products, this mascara does not disappoint.
Again, whilst slightly more expensive, it is available in most drug stores and will leave you feeling fabulous.
The brush is extremely thin compared to other mascaras. Whilst this may seem like a downfall for some, it simply means the application is more elegant. Again, you may need a couple of applications to achieve your desired effect, but this patient process helps to produce great results.
The thin wand of the brush means that every lash is reached, not only helping to separate and coat all lashes, but means the application is extremely clean and there is no risk of it getting anywhere but the lashes.
The bottle is extremely cute and one that would look good in any makeup bag!
Pros and Cons
- Thin brush to reach hidden lashes
- Reliable brand
- Elegant and natural application
- Slightly more costly
- Smaller brush means multiple applications may be necessary
Best False Lash Mascara Options – Wrapping Up
It really does depend on that false lash look you desire. That dramatic look is available both with extremely affordable prices, or slightly more expensive if you desire a specific brand.
The brush really does make all the difference. This can impact how many lashes you actually reach, but can also really impact the smoothness of application.
Whilst most brands offer a false lash effect mascara, you can be sure that your eyes will stand out with any of the above and whether you spend more or less, any will be the perfect addition to your makeup collection!

FAQS
Most brands offer a mascara that is advertised to give you a fake lash effect, but using any of those in this article will guarantee these results.
Buying the correct mascara and ensuring you apply it correctly will help you look although you have fake eyelashes on. Some may take a couple of even coats to achieve this.
